personality
Red, the protagonist of her story, could have easily fallen victim to the same fate that the majority of the characters do—being killed by the Camerata and "processed" into their mechanical world of control. She was at one time one of the most prominent artists in Cloudbank, a singer whose songs, self-written, were designed to provoke people into listening. She crossed paths with Sybil Reisz, who became obsessed with her, and later sold her to the Camerata as a potential target due to her high social influence (the Camerata, prior to the events of the game, had been methodically eliminating people of high social standing whose disappearances could be easily "explained away," in order to remove the possibility of discovery or opposition while they altered Cloudbank's structure using the Transistor). However, when Red was attacked with the Transistor, someone very close to her stepped in and took the hit instead. Although her life was spared, she was affected: ownership of the Transistor transferred to her, which also happened to absorb her voice into it before killing the person who had saved her. Throughout the story, she is unable to speak or to sing, but she can hum and make other nonverbal sounds such as hmms, gasps, audible sighs, and even a laugh. Most of her communication is portrayed through use of OVC terminals, where she types out comments to newscasts, responses to messages, and also converses with the man inside the Transistor on a few occasions.

As a person, Red is described as somewhat reticent, and it's noted in Sybil's file that she became frustrated with how distant Red was toward her even after becoming friends (although the friendship may have been more one-sided on Sybil's part). She decides to let her songs do the talking, and later, her actions. It's just as well that she lost her voice, since it often seems to come as a surprise as to how much influence she actually has over others when she uses it. For example, when the Process begins to sweep the city and become a widespread incident, she comes across a newscast on an OVC terminal detailing that despite Red being one of the thousands of people who "disappeared" in the epidemic, countless people had turned out for a vigil in her memory, believing her dead. Whether she means to or not, Red draws the people around her in. As an artist, while she was able to use that talent to further the message in her songs, she also withdraws from it somewhat in order to keep things from escalating outside of her control. In fact, she caused such a stir during one of her major concerts that people began fighting in the crowd over the meaning of her songs, and Cloudbank administrators (the bigwigs, and also more or less the police, and also mobsters) were called in to break it up. After that the pulled back from the spotlight for a long while. The beginning of the game takes place on the night of her first concert since stepping out of the limelight—and, of course, nothing goes well. She reacts to the death of the man that saved her and the other immediate changes in her surroundings with understandable fear (when coming across an OVC terminal, she writes only "help" in the comment box; not at all like her usual well-spoken self). Still, she's quick to recover, and makes choices very independently, even if they aren't the easiest ones. In fact, she seems to never hesitate to avoid the path of least resistance, even if it might spare her a lot of trouble, because she knows nothing will get taken care of that way. You might even say Red likes a challenge.

Despite preferring to keep her feelings and motivations to herself, she is definitely not what one would call "aloof," as she is also noted to be confident and magnetic in personality. The humor she shares with the man in the Transistor as well as various scenes suggest that she is much more lighthearted once she becomes closer to people, and prefers to relax when she isn't working, rather than remain a major part of the social scene. That collection of people is small, but those that do get close know her well. The Transistor remarks that she "always has a plan" and "never forgets," and she is definitely more of the active rather than reactive sort. In the end, she is able to trace the perpetrators of the Process destroying Cloudbank and save the city, but in the end, she chooses what makes her happy, rather than wielding the power left in her hands to do whatever she wants (which would essentially, in turn, make her just the same as the Camerata tried to be). This choice falls in line with her decision to opt for arts and music, rather than the city development courses she took while studying at school. By absorbing herself into the Transistor, she gets back both the things she wants most: her voice, and the man who saved her, since neither of those things would be retrievable in their current state.

IC
flirting You can try.
hugging/kissing Red's not very touchy-feely, but she probably won't mind a hug.
fighting/injuring Without her weapon, Red isn't a fighter. Check first, but I'll always say yes to trauma.
killing Check first, but I'll probably say yes.
telepathy Would actually be helpful, since Red is (currently) unable to speak! She doesn't have much to hide, just a lot of worry over her sword boyfriend and the city she came from. She'll be very receptive to being able to communicate, honestly.
shipping/smut Not today.
